Job Purpose

The Functional Safety Engineering Manager owns and delivers the functional safety and risk management strategy, policies, team, tools, and budget for all Canoo vehicles.

Responsibilities

  • Build and manage the functional safety team
  • Set company strategy, policy, processes, and directives regarding functional safety
  • Establish processes and expectations for failure modes and effects analyses (FMEA), fault tree analyses (FTA), probabilistic risk assessments (PRA), and functional and technical safety concepts (FSC, TSC), etc.
  • Manage strategy for all functional safety requirements definition, validation, and verification
  • Establish a risk management strategy for all technical risks on Canoo vehicles
  • Establish and meet functional safety and risk management program goals
  • Establish, implement, and manage the work-tracking system for the functional safety team
  • Negotiate and manage budget for functional safety team
  • Negotiate and manage headcount strategy for functional safety team
  • Define yearly goals for functional safety team, and periodically reporting on convergence or divergence towards goals to Chief Technical Officer and Program Management teams
  • Interface with potential company partners regarding Canoo functional safety strategy, compliance, and safety cases
  • Deliver safety cases for all subsystems on all Canoo vehicles
  • Develop training and guidance documentation for all functional safety processes and products

Required Experience

  • 7+ years of working in system safety, functional safety, or other safety-critical engineering position
  • 2+ years of management experience
  • Demonstrated experience building and leading engineering teams on complex systems
  • Demonstrated experience establishing processes for assessment, analysis, test, verification, and validation of safety critical systems
  • Demonstrated experience managing and meeting budget needs for engineering teams
  • Direct engineering contributions to technical systems that have been delivered to market
  • Familiarity with concepts in ISO 26262

Preferred Experience

  • 10+ years of working in system safety, functional safety, or other safety-critical engineering positions
  • 5+ years working on ISO 26262 processes and compliance on automotive vehicles
  • Demonstrated experience in negotiating roles and requirements with other teams
  • Demonstrated experience negotiating and managing contracts and contractors
  • Demonstrated experience managing analysis, simulation, and test processes
  • Experience with one or more programming languages, particularly Matlab/Simulink

Skills

  • Strong communication skills
  • Fluent with all Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Project, etc)
  • Experience with safety analysis software such as Medini, Sapphire, or similar software suites
  • Understanding of ISO 26262 and related system safety concepts
  • Familiarity with parts reliability models and databases such as Military Handbook 217F, NASA parts reliability databases, etc.
  • Experience with Jira and Sharepoint preferred
  • Team-building and management skills
  • Strong negotiation skills
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-moving startup environment
