Job Purpose

The Materials Manager is responsible for leadership and direction to the Material Planning and Warehouse functions. In addition to managing the day to day operations, this hire will also ensure the current processes are properly documented, audited, and followed, and the data within the processes are accurate. Reporting to In Charge of Logistics, this individual is responsible for tracking the key metrics pertaining to material management execution to include purchase price variance, materials usage variance, days of stock, supplier quality, and delivery performance.


  • Establish a regular and routine management reporting process that includes forecasts and status for shipping tools, material deliveries, kit issue and release performance, discrepant material processing, inventory levels, cost and lead time reduction, and status of excess/obsolete materials
  • Establish and build levels of planning and procurement competencies in the group to improve the scalability (volume, flexibility, and scope) of the business
  • Drive improvements in the planning and procurement processes – reducing variation, disruptions, and issues of the processes, while improving process cycle time and decision models
  • Ensure material requirements for production, engineering and service are effectively established, and deliveries of parts and kit releases are on time to meet manufacturing launches and shipments
  • Ensure that inventory levels are optimized, and forecasted levels are achieved, ensure material shortages are a track for a six-week build schedule and that actions are tracked, and contingency plans (and cut-ins) are established
  • Direct Material Planning for the effective execution of work orders and the movement of materials through production and shipping, ensure the timely closure of production jobs and the issuance of variance reports – and the timely disposition of discrepant materials
  • Manage the supply base, through the buyers, to secure and sustain the supply of parts that meet our quality, delivery, lead time and cost requirements, ensure the supply base is issuing their respective scorecard monthly and have action plans to achieve the target levels of performance
  • Execute and manage the adherence to the terms and conditions of the supplier contracts, statements of work, and service agreements, negotiate improvements in cost, lead times and payment terms
  • Ensure the timely execution, or resolution of issues, with regards to the open order report with suppliers; ECO cut-ins, and invoice reconciliations
  • Ensure the disciplined execution of procedures and cutoffs within the Warehouse staff that efficiently receives and logs parts into the warehouse, optimizes part and location consolidation, and achieves daily shipping goals, ensure that all activities maintain and improve the level of safety and 5S discipline in the warehouse
  • Develop and actively manage an optimized warehouse footprint – in the flow of materials and people, locations of parts, and storage methods with the warehouse and material planning staff
  • Strong knowledge of MRP/ERP with a solid understand of discrete manufacturing, bills of material, product lifecycle management, procure to pay processes and supply chain operations
  • Demonstrated skills in supplier operational and relationship management
  • Initiate the material planning processes for the plant; over time transition to managing ongoing execution and driving continuous improvement efforts
  • Supervise the planning and ordering of time-critical materials to support Canoo’s manufacturing operations
  • Identify and communicate any current or future supply risk. Act aggressively and dynamically to avoid shortages
  • Minimize freight costs and maintaining optimal inventory levels
  • Collaborate with other departments such as logistics, purchasing, engineering, manufacturing, service, and demand planning to support quarterly operational and long-term scaling objectives
  • Work with suppliers on operational improvements such as JIT deliveries

Required Experience

  • Bachelors or Masters in a quantitative field
  • 10+ years experience in manufacturing, distribution, finance, or supply chain management
  • 5+ years experience managing others
  • Strong knowledge of MRP/ERP with a solid understand of discrete manufacturing, bills of material, product lifecycle management, procure to pay processes and supply chain operations
  • Demonstrated skills in supplier operational and relationship management and previous experience with working with lithium ion batteries (automotive experience a plus)
  • Experience with developing, optimizing, and analyzing assembly and test processes
  • Experience leading people or projects
  • Ability to influence without authority, experience driving cross-functional change within an organization
  • Strong project management skills
  • Able to adapt to a fast-paced work environment
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills across departments and at all levels of leadership
  • Extensive knowledge of lean and experience applying lean principles
  • Experience bringing teams and processes from a development phase to full production
  • Experience monitoring, tracking, and continually improving total cost equation
  • Extensive detailed material flow analysis experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives
  • Deep understanding of material delivery methods (e.g. powered industrial equipment, automated guided vehicles, conveyor, rail-guided vehicles) and strategies (e.g. forklift-free)
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous factory design problems at a systems level
  • Experience designing greenfield facility layouts and/or material flow strategy

Preferred Experience

  • Automotive and/or startup experience a plus
  • Willing to travel extensively (50%+)
  • Available for all shifts and extended hours: work schedule may vary depending on business needs and flexibility is required
  • Proven ability to manage, launch, and achieve standardization practices using process improvement tools
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software (i.e., Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.)
