Job Purpose

The Costing Manager is a critical piece of the Finance team, ultimately responsible for all data coming from the Cost Estimating team, and the processes, procedures, and staffing required to produce that data. This position is expected to build a team from a blank slate as Canoo grows their scope of business.


  • Weekly (or other scheduled recurrence) Dashboard publishing of complete vehicle cost for all Canoo vehicles in development
  • Comprehensive estimation of complete vehicle cost for future and potential programs
  • Benchmark-based projections
  • Ground-up cost creation from technical data
  • Adjustments to current production costs for new specifications
  • Rapid turnaround of various ad-hoc cost estimation requests:
  • Engineering change assessments
  • Make vs. buy analyses
  • Tooling and capital equipment estimates
  • Work Content and Overhead estimates for internal operations
  • Direct management of a team of Cost Analysts and Technical Cost Analysts to support the above. The Manager will be expected to train and develop all analysts and guide their growth within Canoo
  • Development of the most efficient and accurate methods to calculate costs and track the aggregate vehicle costs and communicate the results company-wide to stakeholders
  • Ultimately produce any costs or data needed by the Program Controlling team to run their business case analysis
  • Serve as the focal point for any communication between Costing and the rest of the teams at Canoo; ensure that other disciplines “buy in” to our philosophy and approach and support Costing as needed
  • Advise upper management on setting targets and goals for future business simulations, giving insight on areas for improvement in our current cost structure
  • Seek outside resources (software and personnel) to bolster our estimating capability over and above our internal staffing
  • Spearhead the recruiting of a world-class internal Costing team

Required Experience

  • Previous experience with direct management of a functional team
  • 5+ years’ experience in Automotive or other manufacturing organizations
  • Bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, economics, business, or engineering
  • Strong Excel familiarity
  • Someone who is willing (and excited) to roll up their sleeves and dig through data, both agile enough to build Excel models from the ground up when needed and disciplined enough to strictly enforce existing processes
  • A professional who is comfortable interacting with teammates of various backgrounds and levels of experience – from first-year analysts to senior executives, sales, engineering, legal, etc. Soft skills for managing people outside their immediate team will be key
  • A natural leader who embraces the challenge of building a team and serving as the advocate for their growth in the organization
  • An open-minded catalyst for change and improvement who is comfortable with a rapidly-changing environment

Preferred Experience

  • 10+ years Automotive experience (program management, Finance, Engineering, Supply Chain)
  • Experience in modeling or analysis in Excel, SQL databases, or similar tools
  • PowerBI, or proficiency in other visual reporting tools

Requirements and Expectations

  • Ability to facilitate remote work as needed, and perform work and attend meetings during the standard working day in California (Pacific) time
  • Able to travel domestically up to 25% of working time
  • Ability to relocate is preferred, but not required
