Job Purpose

The Powertrain Design Engineer – CATIA will be responsible for mechanical component design and development of front and rear halfshafts for current and future battery electric vehicles. You will focus on halfshaft design, 2D and 3D drafting, product assembly in CATIA, associated GD&T and development testing. Make design decisions on halfshafts, associated support parts, and final drive system to qualify the design for mass production. Collaborate with a talented team of design, CAE, and system engineers to create a highly integrated drive unit assembly with electric traction motor, geartrain, thermal system, final drive and power electronics.


  • Responsible for selection of properly sized halfshafts and final drive components for use in current and future vehicles
  • Support sub system integration, creating layouts and packaging studies to generate size/mass/cost optimized designs
  • Select and collaborate directly with component suppliers, setting requirements and quality standards
  • Develop and mature concepts from prototype to production
  • Provide technical support to the vehicle integration and chassis teams while maintaining halfshaft and final drive design requirements
  • Post process test results, identify root-cause of potential issues and make design recommendations to meet the highest level of durability, efficiency and performance for Canoo vehicles


  • Bachelor’s or Associates Degree (or higher) in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • 5+ years of Automotive powertrain design and validation experience
  • Understanding of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T), and experience completing stack up analyses
  • Knowledge of halfshaft manufacturing processes, PAD diagrams, and test methods.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical and thermal physics
  • Strong communication skills and experience with presenting results and recommendations to multidisciplinary teams
